The archive bit

Top  Previous  Next

If you are backing up data and only want to back up the files that have changed then 7-Backup checks the default setting to establishwhether the individual files are already on the backup. The backup source and target are also compared for change time and file size. If 7-Backup notices  that a file is missing on the backup or is different from on the source , then this file will be backed up.

This chapter is intended for experienced PC users and should not irritate inexperienced users. If one leaves the setting described here disabled, then everything will be set up in such a way that 7-Backup does the right thing as far as data security is concerned. Anyone wishing to optimize backup in terms of speed and memory consumption should read this chapter.

Check archive bit for selection of the files to be backed up

The Microsoft® operating systems use the so-called archive bitto tell the backup application which files were modified between the last backup and the current point in time. With each file change, Windows™ immediately recognizes that a file has been changed and automatically sets the archive bit on this file. Fot its part, the backup application removes the archive bit - on the source, once the file has been successfully backed up.

If you enable the option "Archiv-Bit überprüfen für die Auswahl der zu sichernden Dateien (Check archive bit for selection of the files to be backed up)" then 7-Backup will look out for the archive bit instead of performing a file comparison as initially described. This accelerates the backup. You can activate this option if this program is the only one you are using to back up the files. You should also select this option if youwould like to set up incremental or differential backups.
