Operation as a Windows service (7-Backup Serveronly)

Top  Previous  Next

Normally, the program only runs automatic backups if the user is logged on to Windows. If you would like 7-Backup to run automatic backups even when nobody is logged on to the computer, then operate 7-Backup as a service.

Prerequisites: This function requires 7-Backup server. Operating systems: Windows NT, XP, 2000, 2003, Vista and later.

Installation of7-Backup as a Windows service

1.Open the 7-Backupprogram folder, typically C:\Programme\Langmeier Software\7-Backup and then please open the "tools" folder. Then click on "installservice.bat".
2.The reboot the computer or else launch the service manually using the Windows services management console.

Important: In this mode the program no longer provides any screen notification of backups that have been made.

A service does not perform any user interaction. If you are operating 7-Backup as a service, you should enable the backup log from the Options menu. Have the backup log e-mailed to you to receive active notification. Check the log regularly to ensure the backup is running smoothly.

The service does not do what it is supposed to.

If the service fails to do what you expect, this may be for the following reasons:

Under SYSTEM users, the program lacks sufficient privileges to execute the backup successfully.
A third party application is preventing the service from booting. The third party application may for example perform an installation of its own accord when the service is booting. If errors occur during this process, the service will never boot up.
Associated network drives may not be accessible under the service. Use network paths in the backup task (e.g. \\Server name\share name) instead of network drives.

Solution: Open the Windows services' management console and under the 7-Backupservice's properties specify that it is to run under your customary user. The default setting under which it runs is a system user that may (but need not necessarily) cause problems.
